ALLIANCE YOUTH MEDIA SUMMIT CHICAGO: The Dream Is Now @ Gene Siskel Film Center
Nov 3 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

On Friday, November 3, The Alliance for Media Arts + Culture in partnership with Chicago Youth Voices will host the Youth Media Summit/Chicago – a free half-day convening for youth media organizations, educators, emerging artists, and community leaders to gather together in intergenerational solidarity. Together we’ll experience some of the most exciting youth media work of the year, and share compelling new projects and collaborations. We’ll use the insights gained to create tangible goals and values for an emerging 2018 National Youth Media.

For three participatory hours, the Gene Siskel Film Center will be filled with celebration and inquiry – we’ll share stories, experiences, new ideas, and desired futures.

During the Summit, we are excited to present:

  • A Showcase of new youth media from Chicago, IL; Whitesburg, KY; Richmond, CA and beyond;
  • The Launch of THE ISSUE: an intergenerational arts magazine designed to imagine and build a future where we all belong – featuring spoken word, music, and interactive media;
  • Insights in Civic Participation and Media Literacy: a presentation of key learnings from the National Association for Media Literacy (NAMLE) Pre-Conference held in Chicago on June 26, 2017, in partnership with The Alliance, Free Spirit Media, Chicago Youth Voices Network, and 14 Black Poppies;
  • A Town Hall identifying the pressing needs and emerging solutions in the Chicago youth media community, to inspire local collaborations and inform the next phase of the national Collective Action initiative.

Attendance at Youth Media Summit/Chicago is free of charge and includes lunch. As space is limited and we seek a diverse audience, we encourage small, intergenerational teams to attend. Please RSVP here. We look forward to gathering in Chicago! For questions, please contact Jason Wyman, Jason@thealliance.media.

Movie Screening • Swagger @ Alliance Française de Chicago
Nov 14 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Shot in bold colors, with breathtaking aerial photography and a score by Jean-Benoît Dunckel, from the French electronic duo Air, Swagger illustrate the dreams of eleven middle school students, mostly first generation French citizens, from the Parisian projects in la banlieue. Speaking directly to the camera as if it were a long-trusted confidante, these extraordinary young people talk about love, being French, life in the projects, and their visions of the future.

Our World, Our Lives: A Documentary Series:
At a time when alternative facts are all the rage, we return to cinéma-vérité and the documentary form at large to examine the world we live in and the people we live with.

Revisit works by seasoned French directors, such as New Wave’s Agnès Varda, and discover some of the best of a booming new generation of filmmakers consistently singled out for praise by the international press.

Don’t miss out on young Chicago filmmakers with a selection of short documentaries curated by the Chicago International Film Festival and presented prior to each feature. Join our guest speakers as they shed light on facts often stranger than fiction and become a critic during our post-screening discussions

Are you ready? Because anything can happen when you walk out, camera in hand, to meet reality…

Films from Young French Cinema series offered by UniFrance Films, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the Institut Français.

For reservation call (312) 337-1070 or book your ticket online!
